Wesley Named Nominee For AFCA Good Works Team - Wayne State University Athletics (2024)

DETROIT -- Wayne State University redshirt senior offensive lineman Charles Wesley (Clinton, Mich. / Chippewa Valley) has been announced as one of the nominees for the AFCA Good Works Team. Wesley is the lone GLIAC player nominated, and only one of six from the state of Michigan (Central Michigan, Eastern Michigan, Michigan, Michigan State and Western Michigan).

Off the field, Wesley has helped with Boxes of Love, where he helped organize and deliver turkeys to hundreds of families during Thanksgiving;at Detroit Rescue Mission Ministries Soup Kitcken, where he organized the food and cleaned the pantry; at the Salvation Army, where he made sandwiches for the people in need; and he has volunteered at his local church.

Academically, he has been named to the Athletic Director's Honor Roll (term GPA 3.5+) six times, including one 4.0 term, and the Coach's Honor Roll (term GPA 3.0-3.49) the other two semesters. He currently maintains a 3.557 cumulative grade-point average after 115 hours in the Exercise and Sport Science program.

Wesley was named to the GLIAC All-Academic in 2021 and 2022, and the GLIAC All-Academic Excellence Team in 2023.

After missing the 2020 season due to COVID, and the 2021 campaign due to a pre-season illness, he played in all 10 games in 2022, starting seven times at left guard. In 2023, he was chosen to the All-GLIAC Honorable Mention Team as well as being selected as the squad's Offensive Most Valuable Player. He played in all 11 games, starting the last eight contests (twice at right guard and six times at right tackle).

During his two "active" seasons, Wesley has played in all 21, starting 15 times (seven at left guard, six at right tackle, and two at right guard). He has played on the PAT/field goal unit in 16 games, and the punt coverage team in three contests.

The Allstate AFCA Good Works Team
Established in 1992, the Allstate AFCA Good Works Team recognizes college football athletes for their unwavering commitment to community service and their "good works" off the field. This year's 178 nominees champion causes including mental health awareness, youth mentorship, hunger relief, domestic abuse prevention, and many more. In addition to being actively involved with a charitable organization or service group, each player must also maintain strong academic standing to be considered for a spot on the Allstate AFCA Good Works Team.

"Year after year, I'm inspired by these incredible nominees who go above and beyond to help others."

The final roster of 23 award recipients announced later in September will bring together:

11 players from the NCAA FBS
11 players from the NCAA Football Championship Subdivision (FCS), Divisions II, III and the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA)
1 honorary head coach

All members are selected by a voting panel of former Allstate AFCA Good Works Team members, current and former head coaches and journalists who look for exceptional leadership on and off the football field.

About the Allstate AFCA Good Works Team
The Allstate AFCA Good Works Team was established in 1992 by the College Football Association, recognizing the extra efforts made by college football players and student support staff off the field. AFCA became the governing body of the award in 1997 and continues to honor college football players who go the extra mile for those in need. Allstate worked to present the award starting with the 2008 season.

The Southeastern Conference (SEC) leads all conferences with 84 selections to the Allstate AFCA Good Works Team since it began in 1992. The SEC is followed by the Atlantic Coast Conference with 55 selections and the Big 12 Conference and Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference, both with 41 selections. Georgia is in first place with 23 honorees to the Allstate AFCA Good Works Team. The Bulldogs are followed by Kentucky and Bethel (Minn.) with 17 honorees.
