BRADLEY FUNERAL HOME, Marlton NJ (www.bradleyfuneralhome-marlton.com) By Sally A. Downey and Bruce A. Morris INQUIRER STAFF WRITERS Kevin L. Helman, 45, a Blue Bell businessman and youth-sports volunteer, died Thursday of a heart attack after collapsing during a weekly pickup basketball game. Mr.
Helman, an occupational therapist, was managing partner and chief operating officer of Prevention Services a company in Blue Bell he started last year devoted to preventing injuries in the workplace. He melded a desire to help others with a love of sports, establishing training programs for the "office athlete," the "industrial athlete," and one he was developing for truck drivers called Lite on the Road for the Kevin L. Road Athlete." Helman He previously ran a company that provided physical-rehabilitation services for workers. He achieved his successes despite his own handicap. "He was dyslexic, but he overcame it and did amazing things," his wife, Sally Eberly Helman, said.
A native of Buffalo, he earned bachelor's and master's degrees in occupational therapy from the State University of New York at Buffalo. Mr. Helman worked at a rehabilitation center in Albuquerque, N.M., where he met his wife, a speech therapist. They were married for 19 years. Mr.
Helman had lived in Blue Bell for the last 10 years. He was a volunteer and coach for his two sons' basketball, baseball, soccer and swim teams, and was on the board of the Whitpain Recreation Association. Mr. Helman "was a force" on the board, said Joseph J. Palmer, a Whitpain Township supervisor and president of the recreation association.
He was a strong advocate for fairness on travel teams and helped draft a new policy on playing time, he said. "He was a special guy." For several years as a teenager, Mr. Helman and his older brother, Michael, ran a camp for learning-disabled youngsters outside Buffalo. His wife said her husband could always spot a child with a problem when he coached and would give those children special help. Friends and family said Mr.
Helman was the consummate people person. He was the unofficial social director of his street. He was one of the first to welcome new neighbors, and talked and laughed with everyone he saw on his routine walks. The family hosted a Memorial Day party each year that drew throngs. In addition to his wife and his brother, he is survived by sons Kelsey and Jacob; his mother, Gloria Severin Helman; and a sister.
A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. tomorrow at Bethel Hill United Methodist Church on Skip-pack Pike in Worcester Township. Friends may call at 10 a.m. Burial is private.
