Men’s Style Australia|Issue #64EDITOR’S NOTEWelcome to our 8th annual edition of Men Of Influence, our collection of accomplished men under 45 in fields as different as science, philanthropy, comedy, hotel-owning, sport, art and winemaking. Having overseen the compilation of this list for five years now, I can say that this year’s influential men are the most diverse to date in a list that celebrates achievement while also examining – via our questionnaire to each of the men – some of the responsibilities of influence. It perhaps goes without saying that the most common response to that question is “leading by example”, but many of our men also made the point that they viewed influence as an agent by which they could inspire, motivate and maybe even change the lives of people around them for…1 min
Men’s Style Australia|Issue #64Matson® THE SMART WAY TO NEW ZEALAND and AUSTRALIABefore jet aircaft made LA, Dallas and even New York possible within the space of 24 hours, ocean-going cruise liners brought America to Australia – and vice versa – across the Pacific. Matson ran vessels such as the beautifully appointed liners Lurline, Mariposa and Monterey. A new book by a man whose parents met aboard one of the liners, Duncan O’Brien, recalls their glory days... and sure, the advertising may have been arch-kitsch, but the experience was priceless.…1 min
Men’s Style Australia|Issue #64THE NEW GIRLThe phrase is “breakout star”, and Sweden’s Alicia Vikander is currently the very definition of the words. The serene-looking 26-year-old beauty trained classically as a dancer but gave it up for acting due to injury. She has since appeared in many TV series on Swedish television before she came to the attention of the wider world playing Kitty in the 2012 film version of Anna Karenina with Jude Law. Previous to that she’d gained critical attention for her lead role in the 2010 Swedish film, Pure. Now, Ms Vikander has more big budget English language films on the go than you can poke a pickled herring at, from last year’s Testament Of Youth to 2015 films Ex Machina, Tulip Fever, The Man From U.N.C.L.E, The Light Between Oceans, Adam Jones…1 min

Now, under the Viking imprint, 11 of Carey’s novels are reissued with striking new covers carrying illustrations by acclaimed Australian illustrator Michael Leunig. Theft: A Love Story, The Unusual Truth of Tristan Smith, The Tax Inspector, Bliss, Collected Stories, His Illegal Self, Illywhacker, Jack Maggs, My Life As A Fake and his two Booker Prize-winning works Oscar And LucindaandTrue History Of The Kelly Gang are the novels given the Leunig treatment. Men’s Style Australia|Issue #64PASSING THE BUCKEveryone at Calgary Airport is wearing cowboy hats. Stetsons, to be precise. It’s July and the whole city has gone cowboy crazy. This is, after all, home to the “Greatest Outdoor Show on Earth” – the Calgary Stampede, a 10-day tornado of rodeo rambunctiousness, country music, agricultural displays, cacophonous sideshows and enough fried food and beer to clog your arteries until Christmas. Accessing the lobby at the Hotel Arts in downtown Calgary involves walking past a large swimming pool packed with Stampede party people, overwhelmingly girls in brief bikinis and, yes, cowboy hats. It’s a sure sign that for the two weeks of Stampede, this city lies back and sighs, “Bring it on, hoss”. This rodeo is way more than bucking broncos – it’s where the big deals are done…4 min
Men’s Style Australia|Issue #64PURE CLASSMercedes-Benz’s go-fast division, AMG, set itself a formidable challenge in taking on Porsche’s 911 for the mantle of king of the super sportscars. For a start, the GT is an unfamiliar nameplate applied to a new and unproven car pitched against a rival considered a touchstone for driving purists and arguably the most evolved performance icon on the planet. But a strange thing has happened to the Mercedes-AMG GT in transit to Aussie showrooms. Months before its July release, demand had already outstripped forecast supply two to one. Right now, if you want either the GT S, at $295,000, or the limited-run GT S Edition 1, at a further $19,900 premium, the wait on forward orders is now said to be measurable in years. That’s astonishing given that Australia won’t…4 min
Men’s Style Australia|Issue #64HELLO, SPARKLES“Sparkling wine in Australia is coming of age,” says Dan Buckle, the winemaker in charge of producing one of Australia’s most recognizable sparkling wines, Chandon. “Just as with recent developments in Chardonnay and cool-climate Shiraz, where wine styles have stopped simply trying to copy their Old World counterparts and instead stepped up to the plate as uniquely Australian, so too with fizz.” It’s a bold statement but for generations, Australians have slavishly accepted that Champagne from France is the ultimate in wine that fizzes; the epitome of class and default for froth-spraying celebrations. All the while Australian sparkling wines have been punching above their weight, offering diversity and a point of difference from some of the more generic styles of Champagne. “Interest for the consumer comes in a range of…3 min
Men’s Style Australia|Issue #64SUITCASE FRIENDLYAt London Collections in January, Sir Paul Smith introduced his ‘A Suit To Travel In’ by having Olympic medal-winning gymnast Max Whitlock as well as artists from the National Centre for Circus Arts perform some spectacular routines while wearing one. Men’s Style Australia|Issue #64MASKED MENMost men associate the use of face masks with puberty. An eruption of pimples and blackheads prompted a sprint to the chemist for a deep-cleansing, clay-based product that hardened to a Phantom Of The Opera lookalike. The zits were diminished but the skin around them was left as dry as a bone. The soaring popularity of men’s facials in spas and clinics has lead to a re-think. There’s no need to book a treatment costing triple-digits to take advantage of today’s multi-benefit products. Gouging grime out of pores remains one of the main reasons men of all ages use face masks from time to time. But more persistent skin concerns such as dryness, redness and rosacea, tired and prematurely-aged looking skin can also access instant relief from a specially formulated…3 min

The Cold Weather Watch Heritage Swiss brand Alpina enters the 'smartwatch' arena. Swiss brand Alpina has long been considered one of the pioneers in the field of sports watches. Founded in 1883, its Alpina 4 timepiece from 1938 is widely regarded as one of the first examples of a 'sport watch' and its mission ever since has been to create pieces that maintain precision and reliability in demanding environments, like, for example, the Swiss Alps. In that regard the brand has had a long association…6 min
Men’s Style Australia|Issue #64TREND CENTRALThe world’s largest watch fair, Baselworld, sets the trend agenda in timepieces each year and this year’s extravaganza, held in mid-March, was no exception. With show booths resembling staging productions you’d expect to see at a Las Vegas casino, the world’s major watch brands introduce their latest collections, innovations and reworked classics at an event that draws in excess of 100,000 collectors, buyers, media and garden variety watch freaks. The consensus this year post-Baselworld was that the “watch industry”, if such a term really applies, is in something of a state of flux thanks to the “game changer” phrase being applied to the Apple Watch and the other entrants both current and imminent in the smartwatch space (see Elisabeth King’s overview of the smartwatch phenomenon on page 93). Unlike when…3 min
Men’s Style Australia|Issue #64GET SMARTThe major Swiss watchmakers aren’t yet planning to pit smartwatches directly against their premium horological artworks but it’s a fast-moving category they can’t ignore for two reasons. According to Jean-Claude Biver, CEO of TAG Heuer, smartwatches are the obvious way to get “Millennials” – many of whom have never owned a watch – into wristwear. There’s also an executive-heavy older market drawn to these watches, which is why some of the world’s heavyweight newspapers and financial journals such as The Economist, The Wall Street Journal and The New York Timeshave been quick to develop apps for the Apple Watch. Tech companies such as Samsung with Galaxy Gear and Sony with SmartWatch 2 kickstarted the category in earnest in 2013. Later that year TAG Heuer became the first Swiss brand to…3 min
Men’s Style Australia|Issue #64DARK MATTERIt’s no small thing for a very traditional brand like Panerai to introduce new materials into the process, particularly when reinterpreting a heritage piece from the back catalogue. Case in point, the Luminor Submersible 1950 Carbotech 3 Days Automatic introduced at SIHH earlier this year, a reworking of the original Luminor 1950 developed in that decade for commandos in the Italian Navy. What’s Carbotech? The highly distinctive 47mm matte black case is achieved by compressing sheets of carbon fiber at a controlled temperature under high pressure and fixing with the polyether ether ketone (PEEK), producing a durable, less corrosive and lighter material than either titanium or ceramic. What’s more, the pattern produced is never the same. This model Panerai, should you snare one, is truly bespoke. Luminous Arabic numerals and…2 min

I’ve always loved watches because it’s a guy’s ultimate accessory. I haven’t achieved all my goals and I don’t think I’m at the top of my game yet. Did you know much about Hublot before taking on the role? Secondly, it also means he has access to the most high-end of looks, as well as the nous of the in-house stylists at the fashion houses who produce these looks, ensuring Mr Gandy – Britain’s most famous male model (if you still regard David Beckham as primarily a footballer who does a lot of fashion shoots) – is always immaculately turned out. Men’s Style Australia|Issue #64WORE STORIESIt was all about the statement piece when our intrepid street style photographer Lee Oliveira most recently visited Florence for a look-see at what Euro man currently deems on trend and fashionable. Be it the patterned coat-poncho-blazer-suit-jacket, or the vibrantly colourful scarf or pocket hanky, or the unexpected piece of headwear, giving the overall look that just-right tweak was all based on one ‘would-you-have-a-look-atthis’ item. To do otherwise – that is, walk around in a combination of statement pieces – would just be plain peaco*cking. Texture is the other lesson to take from these images – the mixture of wool or flannel with something softer like silk in the scarf, the contrast of drill cotton shirt with tweed pants, the mohair coat against slim fitting, checked trousers, is somewhere between…1 min
Men’s Style Australia|Issue #64GHOST SHIPSGetting from Sydney to Los Angeles these days is as simple as buying a ticket and deciding which box-set to binge-watch on the flight. But back before commercial air travel, the only option was to make the voyage on an ocean liner. It was a journey that took the best part of three weeks and, thanks to the Matson Line’s White Ships, crossing the Pacific in the 1930s became an event in itself. This golden era of elegant guest suites, sophisticated smoking lounges and glamorous dining rooms is beautifully recreated by author Duncan O’Brien in The Grand Manner Of Matson. With all-paw traction with which to ply it, the five-door hatchback is capable of a supercar-like 4.3-second sprint from a standstill to 100km/h. Exercise the twin-clutch transmission’s seventh ratio and the RS 3 Sportback will hit 280km/h. Whether it be boot camps on beaches or push-ups in parks, people are moving away from the barbells and using their own bodyweight to workout. CrossFit, hot yoga and old school calisthenics training have all become quite common and so have obstacle course endurance races like Tough Mudder. This year in Australia alone between 30-50,000 people will be participating in Tough Mudder races. And the brain behind the events, Will Dean, reckons it’s got a lot to do with being part of something bigger than yourself. “CrossFit, Zumba and boot camps are very much about being part of a team – and I think this, combined with functional fitness, is what are making them and Tough Mudder so popular.” What inspired…4 min

The news was related to a crime that, at the time, was not a big deal… which was exactly what the perps intended. But six years later, the events that day launched a history-making global manhunt for one of the world’s most-wanted cybercriminals. The story goes something like this: on that day, unauthorised transfers from Bullitt County’s payroll accounts were triggered to deposit cash in the accounts of about 25 individuals across the United States – people who were most definitely not employed by the county. When normal, middle-class people started getting three-inch long dragons on their shoulders, back in the early ’00s, I thought we’d peaked. When they started having huge Celtic-inspired designs across their chests in 2007, I thought we’d peaked. When pretty girls in floaty Laura Ashley dresses began appearing with tattoo “sleeves” covering both arms from shoulder to wrist, I gave up. It’s estimated that about one in five of the UK population as a whole is tattooed and this figure rises to one in three for young adults (see breakout on Australia’s love affair with the tatt on page 143). Can you make a horrible mistake mixing fabrics? – STEVEN R, NEW FARM, QLD I don’t think you’ll be banned from the pub should you appear in ‘texture-on-texture’, however, I do have strong views on how texture should be worn. A bit like David Hasselhoff’s denim-on-denim look from the 1980s (and by the way, he is still rocking it), texture-on-texture can get ugly. As a rule of thumb I say, if you’re wearing separates, then only apply texture on one half of the body. A great herringbone jacket works best with a simple wool pant. Hal Kendig, Professor of Ageing and Public Policy at the Australian National University, confirmed that there would be plenty of time to adapt if Australians started to live to an age which viewed centenarians as mere whippersnappers. They were comments that appear restrained when compared…4 min

Men’s Style Australia|Issue #64TRAVELLIN’ MANWhen Paul Smith picks up the phone in his London office to chat to Men’s Style, it sounds like the first time he’s been able to sit still in a while. But this is nothing new for the man who began a menswear empire from an old haberdasher’s shop in Notthingham back in 1970. Sir Paul has criss-crossed the globe constantly in the intervening years, indulging a personal love affair with Japan while steadily growing the popularity of his idiosyncratic and deeply personal creations around the world. Men’s Style Australia|Issue #64LOCAL TIMEChristophe Hoppe didn’t have time to check out the competition at this year’s Baselworld. Raised in Newcastle as part of a close family, Robards became almost a permanent uni student in his 20s, studying health and human movement for nine years. In between he supported himself by working as a personal trainer and, perhaps more infamously,…5 min

Men’s Style Australia|Issue #64TATT’S LIFEA 2013 report from the McCrindle social research organisation into Australians and their attitude towards tattooing found 12 per cent of 500 people surveyed had one or more tattoos. Forty per cent of people got their first ink when age 26 or older, and one in 10 Aussies got their first tattoo aged mid-40s or older. Of those with tattoos, it was found 54 per cent have one tattoo, 23 per cent have two to three tattoos and a further 15 per cent have four or five tattoos. Only eight per cent had more than five tattoos, though Men’s Style suspects even since 2013, that figure would have nearly doubled.
