The downloadable version isn’t recording my personal bests; the levels tab says “you have not beaten this level” even after I have. It’s reminiscent of Practice Mode from v1.4, but I can’t find a way to change it.

Seeing as how N+ isn’t for PC, will N++ essentially be a PC version of N+?

That would be awesome! I would love to be able to play N+ on the PC and would certainly pay for that experience.

Just finished beating your 500 levels! I think I’m the first 🙂

I’ll report back later, but one thing I really should mention is that when you’re highscoring a level, and don’t get a new personal best, I really hate that it doesn’t tell you what score you got. Bug, or intentional?

No email received when signing up. How do you enter the editor? Also, the very first level should probably give an overview of the controls. “Press Jump to continue” – what is jump? I had to reload the game to find out.

  • N v2.0 is here! – Welcome to Metanet Software Inc (13) AMomentLiketThis 18 May 2013

Another thing: the “username” field on the main game screen keeps changing text. “aqwertyuiopasdf”, “hjkl;zxcvbnm,mo”, etc.

  • N v2.0 is here! – Welcome to Metanet Software Inc (14) Destiny 18 May 2013

If I maximise the window, the game isn’t in the centre of my screen, please create a fix (or an option) for this, it frustrates me to the point where I simply won’t play this game until that’s done.

Also, would you consider including a ‘classic’ mode for the editor? The 2.0 editor is easier for new players to learn, but the 1.4 editor is faster to use once mastered. I think it is unrealistic to expect any of the experienced mappers to use the 2.0 editor when it takes so much longer to use.

In terms of gameplay and client performance you guys have done an amazing job. The framerate is so silky smooth, it feels excellent to fly around maps in perfect 1 billion FPS.

  • N v2.0 is here! – Welcome to Metanet Software Inc (15) AMomentLiketThis 18 May 2013

  • N v2.0 is here! – Welcome to Metanet Software Inc (18) AMomentLikeThis 18 May 2013

Highscores aren’t ordered correctly. I was the 5th person to have a score logged on 06-2 (all scores are the same time) yet I’m now in 2nd place. I should be in 5th.

  • N v2.0 is here! – Welcome to Metanet Software Inc (19) RabidZombie 18 May 2013

Seems like the OS X build is broken. Can’t get it to work on my Macbook Retina 15″ with Mountain Lion. OS X just says it’s broken and suggests I move it to trash. 🙁

Downloaded with Chrome (3 times). Unzipped with OS X’s built in tool.

  • N v2.0 is here! – Welcome to Metanet Software Inc (20) M&R 18 May 2013

It looks like we have a lot of bugs to fix! Thanks for letting us know everyone, sorry about the mac build… it runs on our iMac but that’s about all we have to test it on 🙁

@Zapmeister: wow! that was fast. You’re right, it would be good to show the score regardless.

@Destiny: what do you find faster in the old editor? We’ve been using this one for a while and we found that after 2-3 days of getting used to it, we can be a lot faster (object placement is fewer clicks, and you can move/edit objects rather than only being able to delete+recreate them). But we might not be using it the way you are.

  • N v2.0 is here! – Welcome to Metanet Software Inc (21) RabidZombie 18 May 2013

Worked out why it was happening. Gatekeeper didn’t like the file (presumably the signature doesn’t match?), so I disabled it and it works fine. I’d ideally not like to have to do that, though.

“The file appears to be damaged.” is the most useless error message ever…

  • N v2.0 is here! – Welcome to Metanet Software Inc (22) RabidZombie 18 May 2013

Tabbing to the next field in the signup form is dodgy. (Main menu and settings.) Would be nice if tabbing behaved as expected for the login and signup.

Signup doesn’t allow emails with capital letters? This is a really bad idea, especially since email servers can be case sensitive.

You’re also doing bad email address validation. “test email”@test.com does not match, for instance. Email validation is hard to get right. The easiest way to match all email addresses is just to allow *@*, since getting a regex that matches all valid emails is tricky and not worth the effort.

Can you make the form elements for login/signup longer? Emails overflow consistently.

Settings and levels menus can’t be navigated with the arrow keys, unlike the main menu. This would be nice.

Story screen can’t be escaped with Esc.

Hi! I’ve found a bug on the editor.. testing only lets you use the default keys. I don’t know if I’m the only person that uses up instead of z for jump? Thanks!

  • N v2.0 is here! – Welcome to Metanet Software Inc (26) AMomentLikeThis 18 May 2013

Is there anywhere we can properly raise issues rather than doing it through the blog comments? I have a few bugs I’d like to report but doing it all here may make things go unnoticed.

Anyway, I’ve made a fun level for you guys called Bugs which involves leaving a map, teleporting back into the map, passing through a one-way with a launch pad underneath by jumping, teleporting through tiles, and grabbing a switch through a wall. Oh, and it consists entirely of 5 tiles and 1 6 tile! 😀

  • N v2.0 is here! – Welcome to Metanet Software Inc (27) EddyMataGallos 18 May 2013

Oh no, I thought you had fixed the score ordering system. When some scores are tied, obviously they should be sorted chronologically! Yet they aren’t, Im not quite sure which order they follow.

6-2 for instance, I was the 2nd to max the score, yet Im now last! (8th or so).

  • N v2.0 is here! – Welcome to Metanet Software Inc (28) Blackson 18 May 2013

If you have to be logged in to access the editor, does this mean an internet connection is required to edit maps?

  • N v2.0 is here! – Welcome to Metanet Software Inc (29) scythe 18 May 2013

As RabidZombie has noted, the OS X version has some sort of signature error that causes it to refuse to open the application. I haven’t figured it out yet; I probably will, but it would probably be good to either a: fix that or b: forgo signing, whichever makes more sense. It does seem sensible to sign something that is getting passed around on USB sticks.

  • N v2.0 is here! – Welcome to Metanet Software Inc (30) smul 19 May 2013

“Error: Only 10 episodes in a column” shows up after completing 09-4 in arcade mode, ‘a-0’ doesn’t get white “completed” outline afterwards.

On my PC the game suffers from a massive slowdown on a lot of levels, i.e. 02-3 is slow and then 02-4 runs well. On some levels like 09-4 or 08-1 performance changes “on the fly” without visible causes. On a different PC with the same CPU (pretty old 1.86 Intel Core2) the game runs fine.

(is there a better place to report bugs?)

  • N v2.0 is here! – Welcome to Metanet Software Inc (31) Destiny 19 May 2013

Okay so I just realised I don’t have to hold space to change between items/tiles and now I really like the new editor 😀

Still one issue though – the object placement is pretty nice, though i’m so used to the old snapping that currently i find it harder to use. I expect with practice that will change, but the quirk I have is that one-ways snap to the closest grid line to your mouse, even if the closest one is underneath the mouse. It feels very unnatural to have the mouse hiding the object that i’m trying to place, so I would much prefer the editor to snap one-ways to the closest grid line above the mouse. Or, if the object is being placed vertically the closest grid line to the left/right respectively.

I just want to iterate how much I hate having the game stuck in the top corner of my screen! Ahhh it gives my OCD nightmares! D:

  • N v2.0 is here! – Welcome to Metanet Software Inc (32) Anon 19 May 2013

Congratulations on this new version! Almost every bug that plagued 1.4 has been removed, and the game is much better for it. However, it’s not without issues:

    – The UI for most new things is atrocious! Looks placeholder at best.
    – The game seems a lot easier than previous versions. Gradual enemy introduction is good, but it leads to a lot of samey levels.
    – A lot of the levels are very repetitive. Doing the same thing 10 times, seemingly to make the level the width of the screen, doesn’t make for riveting gameplay.
    – The login system has various issues, most of which are mentioned above. Myself, I was plagued by the elusive ‘Email sent’ when I’d failed to correctly fill out the form. Also, the message for an invalid username seems to end preemptively
    – Where have half of the enemy placement options gone?! I can understand the removal of Z-snap if it makes something work better on the back end, but the left-right-left and random drone pathings need to make a comeback in a patch.
    – Oh the slowdown

Still, it’s nice to see N make a return, I’ve been having a great deal of fun!

  • N v2.0 is here! – Welcome to Metanet Software Inc (33) kkstrong 19 May 2013

I strongly dislike the highscores system. I’m not quite sure what the score is for the leaderboards (i.e. what the number means) but I’m sure I’ll figure that out later.

What I dont like the most is not knowing what score I got on runs that were not my fastest. That makes innovations difficult to test. There should be a frame counter in the corner like is in NReality. That is one of the most useful features.

I like the leaderboards in 1.4 much better. It is much easier to navigate to all the levels. While the thumbnails are a nice addition, it should have been implemented in a different way. Getting to episode 9 of any column when you have a slow internet connection is horrible.

I would like to see top 20’s come back. Top 10 just is not enough, especially when so many of the maps for this version are so easily maxed.

  • N v2.0 is here! – Welcome to Metanet Software Inc (34) chris16a 19 May 2013

I f*cking love this music xD

  • N v2.0 is here! – Welcome to Metanet Software Inc (35) xela 19 May 2013

I agree with kkstrong in all points. Especially with the Top 10 being not enough.

I think the score in the leaderboards is the total frames you have left before dying. 6000 would mean you had exactly 100 seconds when you finished.

  • N v2.0 is here! – Welcome to Metanet Software Inc (36) EddyMataGallos 19 May 2013

Oh yeah, kkstrong pretty much sumarised all bugs as well as things I don’t like about the highscoring system 🙂 Only thing he left is about the tied scores not being sorted in chrological order, which is a serious issue (Considering the amount of maxable levels or framewars on this version).

And as for the number, xela pretty much nailed it. Its the regular 1.4 score in seconds but in terms of frames.

  • N v2.0 is here! – Welcome to Metanet Software Inc (37) kkstrong 20 May 2013

  • N v2.0 is here! – Welcome to Metanet Software Inc (39) EddyMataGallos 21 May 2013

Hey M&R, I have a suggestion for when you have time, I know you are pretty busy right now and this certainly represents no rush at all.

But, could you possibly create a highscores site, just like you did with N1.4 in HarveyCartel? The reason is that it would be really useful for not only checking by yourself, but also for downloading all scores with some fanmade software in otder to create rankings and stats as we do nowadays with N1.4 (remember that page you created for jg9000 to download the scores? maybe something similar!).

  • N v2.0 is here! – Welcome to Metanet Software Inc (40) Lawbsters 21 May 2013

Are levels supposed to disappear(from the editor menu) when you publish them? Kinda caught me of guard. Also levels seem to have a link associated with them, but they’re all broken.

Regarding actually making levels, Removing Z snap will murder DDA’s forever. And you better not remove diagonal one ways, cuz they got mad potential and I have yet to see a flaw with them.

  • N v2.0 is here! – Welcome to Metanet Software Inc (45) Tricks to searching for levels 22 May 2013

To find authors. Type a.* and click author will find authors beginning with the letter a. Type b.* to find authors beginning with the letter b. Etc. This is a regular expression search, so any regular expression will work.

When searching for maps by title, just enter in one or two words from the title. To match a partial word, like to match the word ninja, just type nin* This is a mysql fulltext index search, so only indexed words will work, but most words are indexed.

If you click Advanced you can search for maps that were posted before or on & after a specified date. Type in the four digit year, followed by a hyphen followed by the two digit month, followed by a hyphen, followed by a 2 digit day. Example: 2013-05-22

This is awesome! Other than the handful of bugs I’m really excited, loving the new frame rate. Only bug I have to add is that on arcade mode (when you beat a column?) when your time goes above 999 it goes to 100 not 1000. And then of course when you beat the column in arcade, flash gives you an actionscript error ):

You guys are awesome, keep up the good work!

  • N v2.0 is here! – Welcome to Metanet Software Inc (53) Otherworld99 08 Jun 2013

I’m baaaaaack… And I’ve gotten the game, and I have some tiny little gripes about it:

N+ for PSP levels are included. (of course, we’re all entitled to our own opinion)
Game slows down when there’s a lot of stuff going on. (Interestingly, at low quality, much better speed. Yea, I need a new computer.)
    Login system’s a little buggy.

Those are my only problems. One glitch that I’ve noticed, not sure if anyone else noticed it. Sometimes, the “resume game” button disappears each visit; other times, it resumes at an improper point.

Take, say, episode 4, level 04. That levels so dang hard, you just wanna take a break. So.. You do. Tomorrow, you go back to your computer. Then, like, the “resume game” button has disappeared, or maybe, instead, it’s still there, but it instead takes you an episode earlier, i.e. 3-04. This is not a huge problem, at least not to me.

    That’s all for now.

(and yes, my comments are lengthy… I just like talking!)

  • N v2.0 is here! – Welcome to Metanet Software Inc (54) Otherworld99 09 Jun 2013

OK, forget what I said about problem #1 and #3, and that glitch, ‘cuz I’ve changed my password, logged in, and success! Sure, login is kinda unessesary, (kinda) but it’s the only way to get highscores, apparently.

  • N v2.0 is here! – Welcome to Metanet Software Inc (55) Loader009 12 Jun 2013

    Hello,
I know, that the following I will say have been already discussed in 2011 (exactly here -> http://www.metanetsoftware.com/2011/happy-n-year <-).

But I want to push up the thought again, an Android Version of this game.
Controls: (Game should be in landscape)
Left: left side of the screen
Right: right side of the screen
    Jump (too complicated?):
    – If you are running left, quickly touch the right side of the screen to jump in that direction
    – If you are running right, quickly touch the left side of the screen to jump in that direction.
    – If you aren't running, a short touch on the screen (anywhere) to jump.

Also, please consider to make it at least for the OUYA, an android console.
    Greetings

  • N v2.0 is here! – Welcome to Metanet Software Inc (56) Nadiim Nafei 28 Jun 2013

Hey guys! Been following N for years now.. I’m deeply in love with the game.. When I heard the news about the N++ I wanted to let you know that, honestly, I was pretty disappointed with N+. The graphics and aesthetics were alright, though the sharp straightforward graphics of N was alot cooler. Also I found it deeply annoying that the game screen zoomed in on the Ninja and panned around with it.. I loved the way I could watch the whole level at all times in N.. which makes for more tactical approaches in the game.. The last and most pressing issue I had with N+ was that the response time was too slow and Ninja felt heavy, all the physics felt too heavy, Which made all the acrobatics and aiming for that perfect jump timing useless and annoying.. Don’t take me wrong, I greatly appreciated that you brought N to the consoles, cause I loooooove consoles and that big screen. But my point is, now that N++ is under development, I would just like to tell you that it would be greaaaaatly appreciated if the physics and the way the game is played loooks similar to N rather than N+.. cause for me, it was that smooth, responsive, precise physics simulation of N that really made the gameplay awesome.. and N+ sucked at that.. And I never really picked it back up.. just my honest opinion.. I hope you will take it into consideration.. If you would like me to elaborate on this comment, feel free to write me an email or something..

  • N v2.0 is here! – Welcome to Metanet Software Inc (57) M&R 29 Jun 2013

@Nadiim: Thanks for letting us know how you feel! We agree with many of your complaints about N+…

About the aesthetics: we prefer the plain, simple presentation of N, however we wanted to try and add some detail for people playing on huge TVs. We’re still finalizing the graphics for N++, but we’re trying to keep things as simple and minimal as possible… however we don’t want it to look just like N, so we *are* playing around with colour and shapes a bit to see what different sorts of atmospheres/moods we can achieve without harming playability.

About the zooming: we had to support SD TVs, which sadly the game wasn’t really playable on without zooming. We definitely regret making the default zoom level the middle one, but if you click the right thumbstick you can zoom out to fullscreen (like the original); I’m not sure if we mention this in-game but we really should have emphasized it since it makes a big difference. We completely agree that seeing the entire screen at once is important, and if there was any alternative we would have taken it, but sadly at that time we couldn’t find another way to support small TVs (other than making the level size tiny); for N++ we are aiming at 1080/720 so we will be able to have everything on-screen without zooming.

About the feeling: we spent a lot of time on N+ trying to get the feel right, however it was never perfect. One reason for this may be that N+ runs at 60hz while N ran at 40, and the old code was *terrible* and impossible to port nicely. Part of the motivation for rewriting N v2.0 in AS3 was so that we could make the game run at 60hz while preserving the original feel, and so far this has helped make it easier to ensure that N++ feels the same as the original.

I seem to be getting closer to the problem. Looks like an issue with Flash Player under Nv2-Mac.app > Package Contents > Contents > MacOS. Trying to open it gives me “Flash Player is damaged and can’t be opened.”

I got a new laptop yesterday and N is running incredibly slow. My current laptop is the same as the last one I had and N v2.0 worked perfectly find. Now it just lags. What can I do?

Hey! Many (or all?) of us are unable to test a created level in the N 2.0 Level Editor. Gives some action script error when we hit the TAB key. Can select only “dismiss all”, not “continue”. And once we hit dismiss, the error goes away but all ‘active/dynamic’ elements disappear. Static objects remain.

    Here’s the error below.

RangeError: Error #1125: The index 0 is out of range 0.
    at simulation::Simulator/APP_EnablePlayer()
    at editor::Editor/Tick()
    at com.metanet.screens.editor::EditorApp/handleEnterFrame()

@joonkar: sorry.. we are aware of the bug, however our programmer Andrew is busy with another project at the moment. It’s definitely the first thing that will be fixed!

One question: is there a ninja placed in the level? (the error message suggests that there isn’t; possibly you’ve placed one but it’s getting deleted during an earlier part of the load). Could you try placing two ninjas and let us know if anything changes? Thanks!

    Please fix this buggin’ problem!

I have spent hours creating levels but couldn’t test them, and after publishing them some of them have mistakes that make the level unsolvable.

Other than that, the game is just GREAT (:

    Hey!

First of all, thanks for this great update on N! I was a lover of NUMA in 1.4 and now i enjoy the fast level sharing in n 2.0. Also thanks for working on the editor bug! Aditionally, i was very excited about the 2-player-mode. It creates a totally different experience of the game. But, is it difficult to get the 2-player-mode online? I mean, so that you could collaborate with other players from all around the world to solve the levels? This would be sooo awesome!!

@adiak: glad you’re liking N so far! There should be an updated version soon.

About online multiplayer — while we totally agree that that would be really awesome, the short answer is, yes, it’s very difficult. This is mostly because N is a fast-paced, ultra-precise game and is not well-suited to online play. thanks for writing — this is a weird Mac issue, but the file is not actually damaged and runs fine: Lion just says that, because Apple doesn’t like Flash anymore 🙁
    Go to:
system preferences (settings) > security & privacy > unlock* (bottom left corner, needs sign-in) > allow applications from ‘Anywhere’.

that should “fix” the “corrupt” file (which is in reality perfectly fine)!

Thanks for your awesome game 😀
But I’ve just downloaded the v2.0 on my MacBook (with the latest OS), and the game is really slow sometimes. It’s not lag, it regularly litteraly slows down, and it gets unplayable… I’ve tried the web version on Kongregate, and it runs perfectly well, but I would also like to have it on my computer.
I’ve seen a coment above about the same problem, do you have a solution ?

@pootis12: Thanks for your enthusiasm! About N+, I have bad news: it will never happen. We worked with the amazing Slick Entertainment on N+ for Xbox360, but that codebase is long gone and they are quite busy with their own projects! N+ for DS and PSP was ported by a company that has since gone bankrupt.

Fear not though: our goal is for as many people as possible to be able to play and enjoy N++. We promise you won’t be disappointed! There’s a chance N++ may make it to PC — we are really hoping to be able to put N++ on Steam, but these things cost money and take time. If it sells well enough on PS4, we think it’s possible, but until then, we can’t say for sure what will happen.

You can help by spreading the word about N++, so that people know about it on PS4. In the meantime, please enjoy N 🙂
