La Fermière’s Vanilla Yogurt is my favorite yogurt, the texture is super creamy and smooth. La Fermière is a family owned company that started in the South of France, they’ve started to expand to the U.S., but it’s still not widely available, I get mine from Central Market in Austin, Tx – but no worries if can’t get a hold of a jar, I’ve made a copycat recipe of their amazing yogurt.
French-style potted yogurt is individually cultured in clay or glass pots to preserve the thick, creamy texture. La Fermière has cream in their yogurt, that’s what makes their yogurt so unique from other companies.
It’s very delicious plain, but you can top with your favorite berries, fruit curd or granola. If you’re a fan ofLa Fermière Yogurt that come in the adorable clay pots, you will love this easy copycat recipe!
I used the newInstant Pot Pro to makethisbatch of yogurt. You can use any Instant Pot model that has a Yogurt Button.
These are the glass yogurt jars I used (purchasehere)
If you save the jars, I found the cutest lids that fit perfectly, Blossom Silicone Lids (purchase here) these lids also fit on the Oui yogurt jars

- Prep time: 5 minutes
- Cook time: 12 hours
- Serves: 5¼ Cups
www.foodisafourletterword.com
Ingredients
- 3 Cups Ultra-Pasteurized Half and Half
- 2 Cups Ultra-Pasteurized Whole Milk
- 2 Tablespoons Plain or Vanilla Yogurt with active cultures
- ½ Cup Granulated Sugar
- 1½ Teaspoons Vanilla Extract
Method
- 1)
Add 1 Cup of Milk and ½ Cup Granulated Sugar into a saucepan, use med-low heat and stir until the sugar is dissolved. Turn off the heat, add 1 Cup Milk, 3 Cups of Half & Half, 1½ Teaspoons Vanilla Extract. In a small bowl, add 2 Tablespoons of Plain Yogurt and add a tablespoon of the milk mixture, use a whisk to stir until it’s smooth then add it to the saucepan and stir well.
- 2)
Ladle the milk mixture into the jars and place the jars directly into the Instant Pot (no need to add water to the pot). Seal the lid and press the Yogurt Button and set for 12 hours. When the yogurt is done, add lids to the yogurt jars and refrigerate for at least 12 hours before enjoying.
*Be sure you are choosing the correct Yogurt setting, depending on your model – there can be 2-3 options within the yogurt button, dough proofing, yogurt making and boiling the milk – check the user manual if you are unsure.

Do you stack the jars? Are you only using the 5-6 jars?

Hi AJ, no I’m not stacking the jars. If you need to stack the jars, seal the jars with lids and add 1 Cup of water to the pot.

Do you have suggestions on making it a bit firmer?

Hi AJ, you can use ultra-filtered milk which has a higher protein content if you want the yogurt firmer. Trader Joe’s has it, Fairlife is another brand that you can find at almost any grocery store

Is it possible to flavor this recipe with lemon? My favorite of the la fermiere yogurts is the pressed lemon.

Sure you can, I haven’t made it with lemon juice yet, but it would probably be yummy – I think I’ll do that recipe next 🙂

Two of my Lafermiere pots still have some of the foil stubbornly attached on the lid. I’ve tried rubbing alcohol to no avail. Have you any ideas?
I made your recipe and love it!
Thank youReply

You can try using Goo Gone, just be sure to wash it well several times.

I didn’t have much luck with goo gone. Best results came from scrubbing with a vegetable peeler!

Any advice for trying to copycat the orange blossom honey flavor? Excited to try this recipe!

I haven’t tried making that one yet, but I would use 1/4 or 1/3 cup orange blossom honey to this recipe instead of using sugar

The only thing that works for me to remove the foil and glue is scratching it off with a razor blade. It works really well.

Do you have any ideas on how to make the rose flavored yogurt that La fermiere makes? I splurged and bought this and it was sooo delicious I need to learn how to make because they are too expensive to purchase on a regular basis .

Hello! I haven’t tried their rose flavored one yet, but you can substitute the vanilla extra with rose syrup (like this one below) I’d start by adding 1 tablespoon to the milk mixture, taste and add more if you want a stronger flavor

Hi Stephanie, you can omit the sugar if you prefer. With any yogurt recipe, you can always omit the sugar

Do you need to use a trivet on the bottom of the instantpot to protect the glass jars?

Made it yesterday, and ate it this morning. It was AMAZING! So creamy & rich! I’ve never made yogurt before, but your directions were really easy & straightforward. Thanks! Do you think doubling the vanilla (or more) would affect the success? Or would I do better with a double-fold vanilla & vanilla sugar? Thanks again.

I’m so happy you enjoyed it! It feels like magic the first time you make yogurt! You can double the vanilla with no issues

hi! I’m also obsessed with La Fermiere yogurt and have been trying to find a recipe. I don’t have an insta pot but I do have an older yogurt maker. Do you think your recipe would work if in step 2 I put the jars into a yogurt maker instead of an insta pot?

Hi Jeanine, yes it will definitely work in a yogurt maker. Hope you enjoy!

Confused on technique, instapot yogurt you do not seal the lid, you use the glass lid. You state to seal the instapot, and if you seal is it vented or non vented. Just not sure which to use. I love making yogurt in my instapot and really want to try your recipe. But I hate to ruin it by cooking it incorrectly.

You can use any lid and it doesn’t matter if it’s vented or sealed. The instant pot doesn’t pressurize when you make yogurt.

We love this recipe! It is so yummy and has ruined store bought yogurt in our house – haha! Would it work to double the recipe and leave half of the liquid in the fridge to make the next day? I saw a question about stacking the jars – it’s a low enough temp that the plastic lids are okay in the instant pot?

I’m so glad you love the recipe! You can stack the jars with the plastic lids if they fit. Add a cup of water to the bottom of the pot if you stack jars, it helps to distribute the heat.

Have you ever pulled the yogurt out of the instant pot before the 12 hours are up?

Hi Caroline, yes I have. It will usually set around 8 hours, but I do prefer the yogurt to be more tart so I’ll leave it in longer
